Tom's career might have been very successful from the very initial years of his life, he reached great heights and standards in every career he opted for, may it be acting or production. His life still has always been on the buzz with controversies and gossips.
The major topic of controversy in Tom's career has undoubtedly been on his interest in Scientology. He is known to be the most blunt and outspoken member of the church of scientology.
It is reported that Tom developed the interest of Scientology from his first wife, Mimi Rogers, in the year 1990. As Tom had been a patient of dyslexia, he said that he had a firm believe in the religion since it helped him recover his sufferings.
It seemed as if Tom was indulging more and more in Scientology as he then went on actively campaigning for the religion, and became a promoter to non-members. The Paris city council went to an extent of even barring Tom from any further dealings after he was described as a spokesman for scientology after lobbying officials like Nicolas Sarkozy and Jean-Claude Gaudin.
Tom was criticized by the medical professionals after he introduced the detoxification therapy for the 9/11 victims. Firefighters were also critical of Tom's step. Following this he was awarded the medal of Scientology Freedom Medal of Valor in the year 2004.
A controversy again was on air when Tom went on openly criticizing the famous actress Brooke Shields for using the anti-depressant drug Paxil. She justified it by saying that it recovered her from the postpartum depression after her daughter's birth, whereas Tom went on explaining otherwise. It blew up a sizzling argument openly on television in the year 2005 on The Today Show.
Thereafter in the year 2006, Tom apologized Brooke, for his blunt comments openly and the matters were then easily settled, she was then also invited in Tom's wedding with Katie Holmes.
The Scientology controversy was so heated up and on top of Tom's head that it made Tom's publicist Pat Kingsley, working him for a period of fourteen years to resign. He of course had to replace him with some one trustworthy, so his sister fellow Scientologist Lee Anne DeVette took the honors.
Tom was head over heels in love with his new girlfriend and he madly showed it in the popular Tv Talk Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show in the month of May, 2005. he ran around and jumped on the couch crazily, bent down on one knee and expressed his love for Katie Holmes. The term "Jumping the Couch" was then commonly associated with Tom and it was also slang term of the year in 2005. The scene was parodied in the scary movie 4 by Dane Cook, released in the year 2006
